How to identify what plastic you have

Check the inside of the part for a recycling code stamp:

2 = PE-HD (polyethylene high density)
3 = PVC
4 = PE-LD or PE-MD
5 = PP
7 = Other (often ABS or PC blends)

If unstamped, the burn test or hot-knife test will identify the polymer. We cover both in how to identify plastics before welding.

FAQs

Why does the rod need to match the substrate?

Hot air plastic welding works by melting the rod and the substrate together into a single fused mass. Different polymers melt at different temperatures and don’t fuse with each other – PP rod won’t weld to PE; ABS won’t weld to PP. If the rod doesn’t match the substrate, the joint will appear stuck but will pull apart under stress.

How much rod do I need for a job?

Rough rule: for a 4mm round rod, one metre of rod produces about 500-600mm of completed weld bead (allowing for the bead being wider than the rod). For estimating, work in metres of rod per metre of weld with a margin for setup and offcuts.

What pack sizes do you stock?

Standard pack sizes are 50m rolls (the most common repair/workshop size), and 400m rolls for production fabrication. Most rod profiles are available in both. Specialty rod and small-volume colours may be 50m only.

Can I store welding rod long-term?

Yes – rod is shelf-stable. Keep it dry and out of direct UV. PEHD and PVC rod can degrade slightly if stored for years in direct sunlight; black rod (UV-stabilised) is more robust. For practical purposes, rod stored indoors for 5+ years welds fine.

Do you stock colour-matched rod for visible repairs?

For PEMD (automotive) we stock natural, black, grey, beige, blue, red and several other automotive colours. For PVC flooring rod, the colour is matched to the floor product – send us the floor manufacturer and colour code and we’ll source it.
