Video of the Spark Tester
This demonstration is done without any weld, to show you how the spark is seen to ‘arc’ across to a conductive material placed behind the work area. In this case we used a piece of steel angel behind the work area. Ideal to ensure your welding is free from any defects and to prove water tightness.
The Spark Tester can be supplied as a “kit” or with just the “tool only”.
Spark testing – how it works
Spark testing verifies the integrity of completed plastic welds, particularly in tank linings and chemical fabrications where leak integrity is critical. A high-voltage probe (typically 15-25kV) is passed over the weld with a copper or conductive wire embedded along the weld line. Any pinhole, void or incomplete fusion in the weld discharges visibly as a spark between the probe and the wire – revealing the defect.
Spark Tester Kit applications
- Plastic chemical tank lining inspection
- Plating bath weld verification
- Acid storage container QA
- Fume scrubber weld integrity
- Any leak-critical plastic fabrication where pinhole defects would cause failure
What’s in the kit
The kit includes the spark tester unit, probe assembly, conductive wire for embedding in welds, and standard accessories. For the spark tester unit only without the supporting accessories, see the Spark Tester Gun.
FAQs
Is spark testing destructive?
No – non-destructive. The high-voltage spark only discharges through defects (pinholes, voids); intact welds show nothing. Safe to use on completed fabrications.
Do I need the wire embedded during welding?
Yes – the conductive wire (typically thin copper) is embedded along the weld line during fabrication. Without it, the spark has nothing to discharge to. Plan the wire placement at the design stage.
What’s the alternative for non-tank applications?
For membrane wedge welds, use air pressure testing. For general weld strength QA, use a tensiometer with coupon samples. See our full weld testing range.
