PEHD (high density polyethylene, HDPE) is the workhorse plastic for water tanks, pressure pipe, chemical containers, geomembrane and landfill liners. Welding rod for PEHD is the consumable for joining or repairing these structural-grade polyethylene fabrications.
Rural water tanks, irrigation header tanks, stock troughs, rainwater tanks. PEHD is the standard polymer for large rotomoulded and welded-sheet water tanks.
Water supply, drainage, irrigation, gas distribution. PE100 grade is used for pressure pipe; PE80 and standard HDPE for non-pressure work.
Landfill cell liners, pond liners, leak-detection layers. Welded HDPE membrane is the industry-standard containment system.
Industrial chemical drums, intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), acid-resistant tank linings. HDPE's chemical resistance makes it the default.
Floating mussel-farm structures, salmon-pen frames, marine pontoons. PEHD's UV and salt-water resistance suits the environment.
Scrubber bodies, fume hoods, lab ductwork, plating bath tanks. Welded HDPE is the standard chemical-resistant fabrication material.
| Spec | Value / range |
|---|---|
| Recycling code | 2 — usually stamped "HDPE" or "PE-HD" |
| Welding temperature | 350-400°C (hot-air); 200-230°C (extruder barrel) |
| Burn behaviour | Blue flame with yellow tip, candle-wax smell, drips burning, floats in water |
| Rigidity | Hard, resists thumbnail dent — distinguishes from softer PEMD |
| Common rod sizes | 3mm, 4mm round; 5mm triangular for fillet welds; flat rod for butt joints |
| Standard colours | Natural, black — black is UV-stabilised for outdoor use |
| Pack sizes | 50m rolls for repair; 400m bulk rolls for production fabrication |
For wall sections under 6mm, repair work, small fabrications, detail welding. Lightweight, portable, low setup time.
For wall sections 6mm+, long structural seams, high-bond-strength applications, full-strength pipe joining. Heavier machine, longer warm-up, much faster welding.
For pressure-rated PE100 pipe work, use PE100-grade rod (not standard PEHD rod) and follow the pipe manufacturer's welding procedure. NZ infrastructure spec typically requires AS/NZS 2033 or PE100+ approved procedures with documented temperature and pressure records.
PEHD (or HDPE — high density polyethylene) is the general material classification. PE100 is a specific grade of HDPE used for pressure pipe and fittings, with controlled molecular weight distribution for higher long-term hydrostatic strength. PE100 pipe needs PE100-grade rod for code-compliant pressure-rated welds; general HDPE work uses standard PEHD rod.
Approximately 350-400°C, depending on the specific grade and wall thickness. PE-HD welds at a higher temperature than PE-MD (PEMD) because it's a stiffer, more crystalline polymer. Test on offcut to dial in the exact temperature.
For wall sections over about 6mm, extruder welding produces a stronger, faster weld than hot-air rod welding. Most HDPE pipe (PE100, irrigation pipe, gas main), large geomembrane fabrication, and structural HDPE tank work use extruder welders. Hot-air rod welding works well for thinner-wall repair work and small jobs.
Yes, for general HDPE. For pressure-rated pipe (PE100), use PE100-specific rod and confirm the welding procedure meets the pipe manufacturer's spec. For atmospheric tanks, structural fabrications, and most geomembrane work, general PEHD rod is the standard.
PEHD is rigid and resists denting under thumb pressure. PEMD and LDPE are softer and dent easily. PEHD has recycling code 2; PEMD and LDPE have code 4. The float test alone won't distinguish them (all PE floats). Use rigidity test plus code stamp.
Tell us about the job: the plastic you're working with, the wall thickness, and how often you'll use the tool. We'll recommend the right combination for the application.
